Isaiah 61: 10 – I will greatly rejoice in the LORD; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Matthew 22: 11 – “But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment.

It would be rather ridiculous for someone to attend a wedding in dirty garments. In our society great care is usually taken to ensure we are properly attired so that we do not embarrass our friends or family members who have invited us to the occasion.

We are preparing for the second coming, an occasion that the Bible likens unto a marriage supper as the Church is the bride of Christ and Jesus, the bridegroom. In our human frailty we cannot clothe ourselves properly for this occasion so Jesus as provided a robe of righteousness for each one of us as our righteousness are as filthy rags. Sadly, we have become so comfortable wearing our sin stained garments that we do not want to take them off. We are like the man in the parable that arrived at the marriage supper in incorrect attire and was cast out. We know that our righteousness is inadequate but we want Jesus to accept whatever we offer Him.

Jesus came to earth to save mankind. He lived a simple life and in time would walk the long journey to Golgotha where at Calvary He gave his life for us.  The King of the universe was stripped of His garments in order to purchase our redemption. He was humiliated so that He could offer to clothe us with His righteousness. He accepts us with the grime and dirt but He does not want us to remain in that state, He tries to clean us up. He washes us with His blood and purifies us from our sins, then He gives us new clothes to wear so that our sinful frame can be covered making us worthy to approach God’s throne not because of something that we have done but because He covers us. We have to strip off envy, hatred, malice, backbiting, lying, stealing, adultery and the list goes on. The carnal things must be removed and as we stand bare of these things He provides us with superior covering; His robe of righteousness. As we accept this covering we are arrayed in truth, integrity, love and other godly virtues.

From the advent of sin mankind has been trying to clothe himself so that he can be worthy to stand before God but our best efforts are not good enough. As the world clamors for the latest fashion, we have to rely on divine help because none of our efforts can save us. We need to accept His robe of righteousness. So what will it be? Will you choose His robe or yours?
