Scripture:  Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. Revelation 2:4-5 (NKJV)

I am not in much of a position to speak on this topic but each of us has experienced a time when we were so caught up with the object of our affection. We spend time thinking about this person, we spend time talking to this person and everything that we do is to please this person. The relationship has to be nurtured by doing things together and being creative in your interactions with each other so the love you feel can grow from strength to strength. When the relationship is un-nurtured the ‘love’ we feel grows old or ‘stale’. Then many of the things that we used to do for this person we just can’t be bothered to do anymore and our relationship slowly fades into oblivion.

We tend to treat our relationship with God the same way. Like the members of the Ephesian Church we were filled with passion when we just became Christians. We were in love with God so we wanted to tell everyone about it. We were early for church, we participated in all the services and we just simply enjoyed being in God’s presence. Like in our human relationships we have to be creative in the time that we spend together with God and earnest in the way we seek Him. Too often we rely on outside influences to nurture our relationship with God so we slowly fall out of love with God. Then like an old married couple we stay with Him out of habit and compulsion because we feel we have no one else to go to or nowhere else to turn.

Fortunately, God does not want us to stay out of love with Him. He wants us to find our way back to Him, to renew our commitment with Him. We can stay in love with Jesus. He is the best person to love. We do not have to serve the Lord out of habit. We can serve Him out of a deep abiding love. It takes work but the rewards are truly OUT OF THIS WORLD! Why don’t you try to recapture that love today?
