—BECAUSE STRAIT IS THE GATE, AND NARROW IS THE WAY, WHICH LEADETH UNTO LIFE, AND FEW THERE BE THAT FIND IT.  MATT. 7:14

I went to the travel agent to book my flight and after scanning through many files the travel consultant decided on the perfect route. I was to travel from Montego Bay, Jamaica and then overnight in Miami before going on to O’Hare Airport in Chicago. I was very happy about my vacation until I got to Chicago and heard that I would have to take a domestic flight to Kalamazoo; was this place even on a map of the world!  From there I would have to travel by road for many miles to get to my destination.

It was a bright day; the sun was illuminating my room as its magnificent rays streamed through my windowpanes. I was ready to go about my daily duties when I heard my name echo loudly over the dormitory intercom system; I was to report to the Dean’s office.

I have this strange year end ritual in which I often remember those who have died throughout the year.  I often contemplate the plans they might have made and the life experiences that they will never accomplish. But in the closing days of 2012 as that mental ritual took place, it had a very different meaning as for the first time many of the names that came to mind were young people that I knew.

What’s in your vent?

One morning my wife and I woke up to very strange animalistic screams coming from the vent of our air conditioner.  For a while, we were puzzled about what it was. We quickly came up with a list of possible animals and agreed that this sound was either coming from a very big rat or a bird.  Riddled with some fear, mixed curiosity, and fully armed, we proceeded to remove the vent.  Little did we know that what was in that vent would change our lives for the next two years.  It would unleash a ball of fury in our home and test the very wits of our patience.  It was a little kitten, only about 2-3 weeks old.

Psalm 150: 6 – Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!

I sat on the bus beside her as we journeyed to Portmore. To the naked eye she looked normal; dressed in clean clothes with hair properly groomed. No one knew that she was mentally challenged until she opened her mouth. While she sat, she read from a Nestle Fitness Magazine and commenced an animated conversation with herself as she posed questions and proceeded to answer them. Persons started to pull themselves away from her.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” – Matthew 5:16. Who are the “men” being referred to in this passage? After years of knowing, reading, and repeating this passage, I only realized the answer a few weeks ago.
